Baby number five surprised us by sleeping quite well in her first few months of life – so well, in fact, that I had time to design the third installment in my Catholic cross stitch ornament series! (The first two are Our Lady of Guadalupe and Our Lady of Częstochowa.) It’s less than 2000 stitches, so I thought I’d be able to get it stitched and published in a jiffy.
Unfortunately, however, the baby’s lovely sleeping habits came to an end when she learned how to roll over at four months on the dot. Then summer happened, with four big kids off from school to wrangle PLUS the wakeful baby – so here we are six months later, and the pattern is finally ready for you!
I promise this project will not take you six months, even if you’re a total beginner. (If it turns out you hate cross stitch, though, you have full permission to let it muster in a box in saecula saeculorum.)
The pattern includes a detailed beginner’s guide, and the pattern itself has two versions – symbols on color, and black-and-white symbols. I stitched the model on perforated paper, but you can also stitch it on Aida and frame in a wooden hoop (like here!).
About Our Lady of Lourdes:
In 1858, a mysterious lady appeared to the French peasant girl Bernadette Soubirous. Identifying herself as the “Immaculate Conception,” she urged humankind to prayer and penance: “I do not promise you happiness in this world, but in the next.”
This design features yellow roses for the yellow roses Bernadette reported seeing on her feet, and the blue background – the shady grotto – lightens at the bottom to represent the miraculous spring. The pattern uses gold beads to contrast better with her dress, but you can substitute pearl-colored beads if you like.
